Books VS. eBooks; Is The Next Generation Better?

I really do like the features of eBooks. You can get loads of content free and some at a small price. It’s environmentally friendlier than chopping down tonnes of trees to create those heavy books. But somehow I still prefer the physical manifestation of knowledge and stories and everything else.

There is something curious about owning a book. It feels like, in a million or perhaps billion copies of books, this particular copy seems destined to be in your hands. Like the three sisters of Fate brought the both of you together.

Sure, eBooks costs less to own and even less [in terms of resources] to produce; It also weighs alot less. You could download a 100 books [if you have the memory space for it] and it will still weigh the same as when you first got whatever device you install them on. You could literally bring your personal library with you wherever you want to on the globe without much effort. But to me, a book is like a personal, physical extention of myself. I know, it sounds gross. But hear me out.

When you first lay eyes on that particular copy, it calls out to you. The first sight of its cover attracts you. You pick it up. The title teases you to what lays inside. A marvelous story about to unfold. Promises of adventure for you to explore whispered to you by the tangible, hefty [or sometimes not so hefty] volume. You read a little of the summary at the back and the tease continues. You purchase the book with your own money, money gained through hard work toiled with you own two hands. The book now belongs to you and you only. The proof of purchase quantifies the notion of ownership. Caressing the volume at the comfort of your own choosing, you open to the first page. In classic versions, you’ll find a red page, like a curtain before a play. In modern times, the curtain pales to a ghastly white or cream. You pull back the curtains and the prelude begins. The musty smell of the book brings you into a trance-like state, luring you into the story. The surrounding sounds stick to the pages like they are made of fly-paper. And you’ll find that the next time you open to that page, you’ll always find that you can hear a faint echo of the first day you opened the book. The feel of the pages brings back memories of that same day. The clothes you wore, the place you were at. A faint echo. Of days of innocence. Simpler times where your inexperience made existence a bliss.

After reaching to the end of the book, it feels heavier, because now it is filled with your memories. Your thoughts. Your theories behind the plot.

All these, I find lacking in an eBook, though it faintly resembles a book, as many has tried to emulate it. The way the pages flip, the sound it makes, you can even customize the pages to look like an aged, oxidized-brown page. But here is no substitute to the textured paper and the various marks you left behind on a book. Like a coffee stain that instantaneously transport you the the very fateful day that you were drinking coffee and accidentally dripped on that page. Or that ear-mark that reminds you of interruptions of a relaxing read. Memories. Left behind on your very own copy.

Like Mr. Giles once said “Knowledge comes from crafted bindings and pages; not 1′s and 0′s!” “. I love the musty smells, the weight of books in my hands.

And I also love to read the papers rather than get news from the web, if time allows. Again, the smell and feel. The total normalcy of it. Rather than looking busy and trying to absorb mass information in the quickest time, having breakfast over the papers just seems more real. Or being dependent on my device for everything. Sometimes, having different media sources for different things keeps things fresh. Rather than looking at my iPhone for every single content I want, having alternatives keeps my iPhone more engaging for me in the long run. Plus you can’t whack someone with a rolled up piece of Internet.

Hannibal Rising: A Man’s Journey to Monsterdom

Hannibal Rising depicts the early life of Hannibal Lector and allowed readers a sneak peek into the childhood factors contributing to Hannibal’s transcendental journey into a monster.

The book started out chaotic. Flashes here and there that reveals small parts of Hannibal as a boy. The early chapters leaves the readers to use the imagination to map out a story that flows naturally in our minds and forces us to interact and be involved with the story rather than passively allowing it to be revealed to us; This set up the frame of mind for me when reading the book to the point where everytime I open the book, I immediately form a connection with the book and attached part of myself to it. And the later chapters would chill me to the bones.

The book’s use of rhythm was subtle. Phrasing sentences in ways that elicit particular emotions made the story of this cold-blooded killer even more intriguing and lures readers into the very same mindset as Hannibal during his development age.

The focus of this novel wasn’t so much as the gruesome parts, but rather the formation and thought process of this extremely deep, multi-layered character. A character who shows love even in cold blood.

All in all, reading this novel was akin to owning a small box, opening it only to find a larger box inside. And despite digging deeper and opening the numerous boxes, all you could find was a bigger box inside still. And in the end, you realized that the answers to the questions you search were scrawled under the lids. The book itself is a journey. A journey through a fascinating mind.

Books Galoré

Just went down to MPH at Raffles City Shopping Centre to shop for books as they are currently having a pre-renovation sale.

Bought The Spiderwick Chronicles. All 5 of them for a measly $15. And Ptolemy’s Gate [it's a silent 'P', if you don know how to pronounce Ptolemy] was a cheap cheap $12 for a hardcover. In fact, the Spiderwick set are all in hardcover. And last but not least, Stardust paperback at $6.

Stardust took me close to an hour to hunt down till I finally saw it in a strangers basket and asked him where he got that book. I’ll have to admit that I was tempted to just snatch it away from his basket when he wasn’t looking. But my moral values prevailed. Huh. Something must have stuck from my teacher’s teachings. And even after the kind gesture of he dashing youg man, it still took me about 15mins to finally locate that book at a particularly obscure corner.

The whole plae is in a mess. Books of every genre were strewn all over the place. People crawling and cavorting eveywhere. My lusty right elbow has brushed the bosoms of at least three ladies. Oops. And some gentleman too. I wonder if the chaos was intentional or caused by the hordes of meatsack cluttered everywhere.

A word of advice, if you want to go down to grab a steal, and you should (promotion ends at 28th Feb), allocate a couple of hours to browse each section and enjoy the wonders of retail therapy. And bring a hefty sum of cash to change that steal into a Grand Theft Auto. And if you are trying to find a particular item, well, good luck!!! You’ll need it.

All in all, I’m just happy with my haul for the day. $33 for 7 books. This is nuts!!! And I’m especially happy to find Stardust.

Remember, the sale goes on from now till 28th Feb. Don’t miss out on this chance to save loads on books. It’s up to 90% off on books items!

Ah, books are chocolate for the soul.

The Day Talos Gets His Books

Chinese New Year is just around the corner and my work schedule is like amazing. Morning shift all the way for three weeks. Off day this coming Saturday, in which I’ll be a busy little bee. But I’m free Friday night. So if anyone want to ask me out for dinner to catchup, especially those mentioned in my previous post, please do so. And of course SiSter and Sea Hum.

So like I said before, I’m planning to take up art again, specifically painting. But somehow I doubt that my brother will take it kindly with the sudden appearance of an easel at the corner of our room. Nor the stinky paint smells. Guess I’ll have to find an alternative. Or start when I get my own place in the future.

So in the meantime while I hold my horses on the arty farty fancies, I need a new hobby. I’ve read my books over and over and over and over that I’m in serious need of some new materials. Thankfully, my brother will be, once again, generously picking up some books for me soon. But seriously, other than jogging and reading, what else can I do to unwind before I start turning sadistic? Any suggestions?

And this CNY, surprise surprise!!! I’ll not be working! Whoo!!! And if I may, I’ll add a Hoo!!! Apparently they gave me a whoopin’ three days off starting from the first day of CNY even though they are open for those days. Working on the eve from opening till closing at 5pm.

Guess I’ll be going out on the third day for some movies. Would it be too evil to sit at my workplace while they are slogging and watch them work while I relax? Probably.

Most importantly. My pay day is coming. At last I can use my hard earned cash to go relax. Like a movie. I wonder what would be nice. Hmmm.

Ok such a random post for today. And I’m wondering what to title this post…

[update]

OMG!!! I’ve just gotten my books from my brother. A whooping 6 titles including…

Hannibal Rising by Thomas Harris
The Associate by John Grisham
Anathem by Neal Stephenson
The Hour I First Believed by Wally Lamb
Duma Key by Stephen King
The Terror by Dan Simmons

I’ll post pictures below later. A whooping 5.6 kg total weight of glorious paper and ink. I can’t wait. I’m feeling the low right now. And no, you can’t exhange brothers with me.

And here are the photos…

The last photo shows the total books weight on the scale at 5.6kg. I’m calling those books my baby for the time being. My baby weighs 5.6kg. Oh God, I’m so proud. *sniffles*

See. Sometimes you don’t need fancy gifts to make someone happy. Especially for me. I’m fine with books and all. Currently looking for the book Stardust. Although if someone wants to give me a Nintendo DSi, I wouldn’t say no. Which reminds me of a joke.

“Greedy! ;p”
